It’s the craze that’s spreading through social media, from Tom Cruise to David Beckham, Jennifer Aniston to Cheryl Cole, it’s the ‘ALS Ice Bucket Challenge’.

 The ALS ice bucket challenge aims to raise awareness of this condition,  ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or our UK equivalent Motor Neurone Disease (MND)

MND is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord.

 This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting.  MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order. Currently there is currently no cure for MND, symptoms can be managed to help you achieve the best possible quality of life.

Hence the awareness message and funds to support further research.

So what is this Ice Bucket Challenge????

It’s simply pouring a bucket of cold water over your head and then challenging someone else to do the same and to donate some money at the same time.

 So what happens when you get a challenge??

Our step by step pictorial guide, (demonstrated by Tracey Bush who is the Spiral Health Chief Exec) will help you out

Step 1

well before

 

Preparation, make sure you have a collection bucket for some sponsorship as well as your own donation (we had a collection bucket kindly supplied by Blackpool-Wyre and Fylde branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association where you can donate some more cash)

Clothing style optional!

Step 2

just before

Just close your eyes and don’t count the number of ice cubes your friends (or ex-friends as they will be now known) have put into the container holding your water.

Have a friend close by who you can trust not to throw ice or water at you , in this case its Norman the Spiral Skeleton.

Step 3

Mid way

Hold your breath

grit your teeth

its getting worse!

Step 4

full amount

Keep holding your breath as it hits all parts of the body and we hit total emersion 

Step 5

after

Sharp intake of breath!

listen to your friends running away!

try not to swear!!!
